NAJIB: NO ADVISORY AGAINST TRAVEL TO INDONESIA

PUTRAJAYA: The government will not issue a travel advisory against Malaysians visiting Indonesia unless the situation in the neighbouring country worsens further, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

Najib said issuing a travel advisory was a serious matter as it would affect relations at the government and business levels as well as those on a personal-to-personal level and the government had to take all these into consideration before deciding.

He said he would consult Wisma Putra about the incident where the house of a 60-year-old Malaysian engineer in West Kalimantan was pelted with stones by five men wearing the “Ganyang Malaysia” head bands on Tuesday but said there were no plans to issue an advisory at this stage.

“These is no hard and fast rule (on the situation that warrants a travel advisory being issued) but we must only issue a travel advisory when the situation warrants it.

“(The travel advisory will be issued) when lives are in danger or perhaps we receive information that something very serious is going to happen,” he told a press conference after receiving a Merdeka celebrations card from the children from Sekolah Kebangsaan Bukit Damansara here Wednesday.

Najib also said that in matters concerning two neighbouring countries it was difficult to stop any problems from arising, especially when there were territorial issues involving vast open waters that had not been fully resolved yet.

“There will, for sure, be problems arising from time to time but we need to take a stand to work together to resolve the issues that arise and ensure there are not other parties getting involved who make matters worse.

“If there is an incident we must work to resolve the incident and not resort to reactions like the protest that were over the top like the ones that took place recently,” he said, he adding that he hoped that the situation Indonesia did not worsen further.
